Mechanical computer

I was reading about Charles Babbage. Clearly the problem is that he wanted to use 10 digits to be the basis for computation. I was wondering if it was possible to build a mechanical computer but it would be based on binary NOT 10 digits.

I can't find anything on the intenet about it - strange, people have tried to rebuild the Babbage machine but not try to create a one with the benift of hindsight.
