BBC NEWS | Education | Lecturers stage march over pay
I was talking Alan the other day and came up with a proposal for the lectures.
I think they are hurting the wrong people. After all the students have zero buying power and have no influence on the government ( after all if they had power then they would have stopped the introduction of topup fees).
Not there is one group with has a direct line to Government and that is the Human resources departments of all the main big corporations.
To bring these departments on board I belive the University lectures should take the long view.
I belive that the University lectures should mark everyone and either fail them ( about 1% of student fails) or they should give them a first.
This would reduce the marking load on Lectures ( all they have to ask them selves is "is this a fail No, the its a first"). More importantly it would get the Students on the side of the lectures ( who's going to turn down a first).
Finally it would put the pressure on the HR departments to actually do work. If instead of creaming off the applicants with top marks HR staff actually had to read the CVs/Resumes sent in then I feel they would quickly put pressure on the corporations to put pressure (in the long term) on parliament. Perhaps Lectures should combine this with charging the employer for any references written.
After all what academic benefit does giving a grade give to a student? Students either get a grasp of the subject or they don't. These fine levels of grades don't add to anything to detail understanding of a subject, so why do it.
